New vs. Used Power Equipment

Posted by Jack Barry on Tue, Aug 21, 2012

We get a lot of questions from people sourcing power equipment regarding the benefits of used vs. new.  One of the first questions we ask is: what do you need the equipment for? Is it:

  • Emergency back up power?
  • Standby power?
  • Heavy equipment power?
  • Something else?

Then our experts analyze your needs and specifications. Then we help you decide if a new or used piece of power equipment is the best fit. At Depco, we buy new, used and rebuilt equipment, including Caterpillar engines, Cummins generators, used diesel generators and more. As an independent company in business for more than 20 years, we find the best products at the best prices and guarantee first-rate customer service.

Three of the biggest factors in deciding between used vs. new are availability and lead time, price and warranty.  Often the piece of equipment you need is not available for an extended period of time, in some cases up to 52 weeks. Unless you are planning a manufacturing ramp far in advance, an extended timeline may place constraints on your ability to produce. In this case, a surplus piece of equipment or a used option may be your best choice.
Price also plays a role in making a decision. There are instances where surplus equipment, which is technically new, is a better price value than something brand new. Also, on a per Kw basis, sometimes older equipment is a better value.

Most companies choose to buy new when they want the standard manufacturer’s warranty which is usually one or two years depending on the equipment type. For Depco used equipment, we offer a 30 day warranty on used and rebuilt inventory and a six month warranty on rebuilt equipment.

The biggest downside to purchasing a used piece of power equipment is usually that you have to take the word of the seller regarding the condition of the equipment. Depco takes that guess work out of the equation with our comprehensive inspection, testing and servicing process we call “The Depco Way”. It’s our commitment to you. You will know we’ve conducted the right due diligence and properly tested, repaired your machine. We test all our used generators for various loads because we have the right resources and experts in place to deliver on the promise of quality.

You can see how, when you work with a reputable partner, purchasing a used piece of power equipment can be a good investment. A used, rebuilt or surplus generator can often provide tremendous value and should be considered in your purchasing strategies. Have questions about which generator set best suits your needs?
