Emissions and Tier4: What you need to know

Posted by Jack Barry on Thu, Aug 15, 2013

Any company that owns diesel powered equipment, or is looking to purchase diesel powered equipment including generators and engines, needs to be aware of emissions and Tier4 requirements.

Tier4 is a new set of requirements mandated by the government that reduce the amount of harmful exhaust gases emitted by diesel engines. The exhaust gases that have been deemed harmful are nitrogen dioxide, nitrogen monoxide, and the coal and black soot discharged by diesel engines when they consume fuel. These emissions are found in diesel engines that have been produced before 2011.

Replacement parts that make older diesel engines Tier4 compliant will be encouraged and widely sold. However, refusing or neglecting to make those older engines compliant will eventually result in a fine and potential legal action over time. In addition, Tier4 compliant engines will be required to run on specially designed fuel that is Ultra Low Sulfur in order to reduce the impact of diesel engine emissions on the environment.

In return, Tier4 engines will be 5% more efficient on their energy usage than the older engines, especially over time as the initial cost of compliance may require upfront expenditures. The really good news is that the government is offering incentives to achieve compliance with emissions and Tier4 status, and so some of the costs may be written off or come at a lowered expense. Older machines might actually be able to become retrofitted with Best Available Control Technology for particular engines, enabling fleets to become compliant much more swiftly than on a case by case basis.
