The 5 Parts to Watch For in Remanufactured Engines

inspecting remanufactured enginesBuying remanufactured engines doesn’t carry the same risk as buying any old used industrial diesel engine.Depending who you’re buying from, odds are these engines have been disassembled, all the parts have been cleaned and inspected, and the equipment has been put back together with maximum precision and care. The fact is that rebuilt engines are often more reliable than their brand-new counterparts. They’ve been out in the field and they’re ready to work hard again. That said, remanufactured engines have some miles on them.

Here are the engine parts you’ll want to inspect most carefully:

  1. Piston rings: If these critical seals between the piston and the cylinder are damaged, compression leakages will occur.
  2. Bearings and gaskets in remanufactured engines: The good news is that the cost of these oft-replaced parts is relatively cost-effective when compared to other parts and equipment.
  3. Crankshaft: The name alone suggests just how much this key part is in action, making wear and tear a reality that will require careful vetting from prospective buyers. We mention bearings above; be sure to closely inspect crankshaft bearings, as well as the part itself.
  4. Connecting rod: When remanufactured engines are cleaned and reassembled, it’s not uncommon to replace the connecting rod. Inquire about the age of the rod and find out whether it has been replaced or not when looking at rebuilt units.
  5. Exhaust valves: When they’re not sealing as they should be, compression leaks can occur. Again, this is the case of a relatively small and inexpensive part with the potential to cause major problems for an engine.

Remanufactured engines have proven themselves in the field. They’re rejuvenated, cleaned up and usually offer a substantial discount over their newer counterparts. But without closely inspecting an engine’s parts, leaning about its service record and asking questions about its maintenance, you’re gambling on your future operational uptime.
