Selecting Diesel Power Generators For Rough Terrain & Harsh Weather

protecting diesel power generatorsWhether you’re selecting diesel power generators for backup or primary use, the equipment’s job is to make sure you’re operation stays up and running in any conditions. The last scenario you want to see play out is having your equipment fail – especially emergency equipment – because harsh weather, high seas or extreme temperatures got the best of it.

New or used, diesel power generators are an investment. Here are a few ways to make sure you protect that investment:

  • Enclosures for diesel power generators
The best way to ensure your generator is safe from the rain, sea, and other elements is to choose a sturdy and reliable enclosure to house the equipment within. There are two options for getting an enclosure. You can purchase a pre-installed shell or you can buy a separate enclosure. The scenario for the latter choice is that you purchased unprotected generator that you then moved into a harsher environment – where water or extreme temperatures are now a threat to the equipment’s operation and your uptime. Separate enclosures often take the form of containers. These may come with features including mufflers, fuel tanks, and access doors. Additionally, any enclosure should also come with some level of soundproofing. If preventing noise is an operational concern, that’s another reason to consider an enclosure.
  • Maintaining your diesel power generators in tough environments
If you’re knowingly exposing your diesel power generators to a challenging environment, one proactive step you can take to counter this exposure is to vigilantly practice maintenance and upkeep. This includes installing your diesel power generators for easy access. Remember, when your operation is constantly threatened by Mother Nature, getting a repair outfit and spare parts will be challenging, too. Be sure to keep commonly replaced parts on hand and make sure you have someone trained to diagnose and repair generator malfunctions.
  • Weighing the warranty
While purchasing a warranty is a no-brainer, if you’re going to be housing your diesel power generators in extreme environments, be sure to read the fine print to learn what is protected by warranty and what’s not.

Not all operations are headquartered in sprawling suburban industrial parks. Some are 500 miles out to sea, or underground, or on remote islands that are difficult to reach. If your operation doesn’t enjoy optimal conditions, be sure to take proactive steps to protect your diesel power generators.
