Caterpillar C15 Generator Set: Joining Caterpillar's Microgrid Technology Suite

Posted by Depco Power on Thu, Sep 29, 2016

Caterpillar C15 Generator Set has become a complement to the Microgrid Technology Suite. Just introduced, Caterpillar is moving toward providing environmentally friendly equipment for the production and storage of power. No longer developing and manufacturing equipment that relies on fossil fuels, Caterpillar now uses a host of technologies to generate power.

Generating power, while storing power fits a vital need for mining operations, industrial facilities and more. Adding an environmental option allows Caterpillar to leverage its brand, moving vertically in the market by creating another product class. It also provides a marketing dimension demanded by current markets.

Recognizing the need for change, Caterpillar has gathered a host of technologies, including its tested and reliable generators as standby power sources. The environmentally friendly technologies include wind power, solar panels, and energy storage. Included is the controls and monitors that accompany the Microgrid Suite.

Now a hybrid system, the Suite promises the same energy production as the older systems, but with its state-of-the-art storage capacity, there now exists an additional boost that enhances the Caterpillar's newest product's utility.

Recently, Caterpillar tested the suite against three C15 generators. Each generator produces approximately 410-kW. The Suite deployed 500kW of solar power coupled with 500 kW of short-term storage using batteries and ultracapacitors. The suite of technologies proved successful.

Despite the test's success, Caterpillar does not foresee the Suite as a replacement for it famous generators. Rather their recognition continues as viable and useful tools that complement other power production technologies. One thing remains constant and stands as the reason behind the generator's development in the first place -- power sources fail no matter how good they are.

Like the stock market, a black swan may take to wing and undermine any power source. Some call it "Murphy's Law", but whatever the case, if something can go wrong it will. This highlights the reason why generators came into existence.

Reviewing the capacity and capabilities of the C15 serves as a reminder of the usefulness and prowess of this line of generators.

The reliable C15 produces between 320 ekW to 500ekW at 60Hz. Aside for standby deployment, the C15 can assume a prime application with the diesel sets. They have an unsurpassed design. Engineered to ISO 8528-5 requirements, they accept 100% rate load in one step. They meet seismic certifications and these sets possess low fuel consumption, conforming to EPA Tier 4 Interim certification.

Keeping the set running consistently, the sets incorporate Caterpillars UPS, ATS and switchgear. With these technologies, some sets have expanded functionality enabling monitoring and control remotely. Aside from a host of accessories that enhance utility for specific or special needs, multi gen paralleling is possible. Caterpillar even provides flexible options for spatial and climate restrictions. With so many options and features, the holistic approach to the C15 design's reveals itself.

These powerhouses have successfully operated for decades and is the reason for their popularity and widespread use. Just going over the specs underscores why they prove a perfect complement to the Microgrid Suite. Adding the remote capabilities only serves to enhance the C15's appeal.

The vertical scaling of Caterpillar's brand should prove highly successful while serving to increase the sales of its more traditional products like the C15. Without changing their brand, Caterpillar has scored a big success with its new products that employs a host of technologies. Allowing Caterpillar to innovate other power technologies by supporting research and innovation through new sales, gives promise to Caterpillar's desire to will continue as a leader in power production technology.
