Buying Used Equipment: What You Need to Know

Posted by Jack Barry on Fri, Jun 29, 2012

All Depco products are certified pre-owned and we even offer a program where you can trade in your old equipment for an upgrade.  Many facilities and corporations buy pre-owned products because it is the most cost effective way.

History

Before you buy a used car, you want to know the miles, previous owners, and past accidents, right?  All these considerations factor in the price and performance of the vehicle.  The same goes for power generators.  Except, in generators, you want to check the age, hours, and usage.  Was this used generator on stand by for most of the time?  Or was it going at full force 24/7?  Either way, this impacts the performance and efficiency of the generator.  Sometimes, sellers don’t have all this information.  But since all Depco products are certified, you can rest easy in knowing all equipment have been checked and tested before they hit the selling floor.

Is the Manufacturer a Trusted Name?

Check to see if the maker of the generator or equipment is an industry leader and is well known for reliable and efficient gear.  These manufactures usually include Caterpillar and Cummins, two brands Depco carries.  Using respected brands also means you will have service and parts ready at your fingertips in case anything should happen.

Status of Equipment

Do your own investigation to see if the piece of equipment has been well maintained and serviced.  You can also do this by asking the seller questions regarding their knowledge on diesel engines, power units, transfer switches, generator ends and the like.  If the seller, like Depco, maintains the equipment with regular testing and care, then the unit is much more likely to have a longer shelf life.

Check for Wear and Tear

Visually inspect the generator.  Sometimes you may find the engine was replaced from a different manufacturer.  This isn’t a bad thing, as long as it was placed by a certified technician and all parts were taken into consideration.  Make sure you know where to get replacement parts if you spot any corrosion or cracks. Lastly, replace all bearings and bushings, especially if the seller didn’t.  This is to prevent any equipment failure and it is better to be safe than sorry.

Take a Load Off

Do a load test.  Make sure your dealer has already done so.  This tests looks for overall efficiency of the equipment while running. You should know what type of load the generator or equipment can handle.  And don’t do just one test.  Double and triple check the frequency levels and output.

Consider the Source

Just like students don’t want to use Wikipedia for their class papers, you don’t necessarily want to buy pre-owned equipment off of eBay or Craigslist.  Who knows what type of person is selling it and you also don’t know if they are certified.  Your equipment is much too valuable and important to takes risks with unqualified individuals.  Brokers cost money to use but organizations like Depco have years of experience and lots of trained professionals who are experts in power generators.

Now that you know the tricks of the trade, you are ready to be a proud owner of a certified pre-owned power system.
