Diamond Divers - Epic Journey Stifled by Crashing Marine Generator

Most people don’t usually think of diamond mining as a marine excursion, but the new Spike TV show “Diamond Divers” takes you into the depths of the ocean searching for diamonds. Not a little scuba diving adventure like your last vacation, we are talking deep ocean floors where only professional divers rather than weekend warriors go.

Marine diamond mining uses big machinery, like hydraulic suction systems to suck sediment off the ocean floor bring it to up to the boat for sifting. It’s a very dangerous job. The danger is not only the perils of storms, sharks and pirates but also equipment failures that can leave an entire crew stranded.

The show highlights a crew from Washington, exploring for marine diamonds off the coast of South Africa. The area, known as the Skeleton Coast, is known for shipwrecks, terrible storms and many lost ships at sea. In this episode, a crew is fortunate enough to have their generator breakdown at shore rather than while out to sea.

Anyone who owns a large boat knows the generator is more than important, it’s mission critical.  It provides the electricity to the boat. Everything from the power tools to the navigation system depend on it. As one crew members points out, “it could mean an entire day at sea lost or maybe even weeks.” You can see in the video, the entire crew comes to a standstill as they learn it will take more than a week to rewind the generator. This clip is captioned: “When you're about to start an epic journey across the sea to look for precious diamonds, the last thing you want happening is your generator going bananas.”

This is a great case study for having a back up power solution or a direct connection to a supplier like Depco to source a replacement quickly. Can your crew afford to be idle for more than a week?

Maintaining your generator is important to performance and long life. But just like all equipment, you can expect failures to happen. It’s just a matter of when. There are some preventative measures you can take before you depart on your epic journey. Make sure you follow your generator operator’s manual for procedural checks to take before you leave on your excursion. If you have an equipment failure and need a replacement, consider sourcing a pre-owned generator to get you back on the water quickly.
