The Most Important Aspect of Buying a Generator - Sizing

Posted by Leigh Dow on Mon, Nov 19, 2012

No matter what type of generator you are sourcing, the most important place to start is sizing the generator. Generator sizing is the process of determining the size of the generator for the scenario. Sizing helps determin the wattage you need to have on hand for your situation.

There are many software applications on the market to automatically calculate the power you need. Almost all generator manufacturers offer generator sizing software. You just start by entering the number of devices you are using, but the old school way to generator size is to add up how many lights, electronics, HVAC units and equipment requiring electrical power. Then you combine the number of units and calculate the wattage to run them. Make sure you allocate for the startup wattage AND the running wattage. This is particularly true for equipment. Manually calculating the requirements is really no longer necessary, but it's always good to know how it's done.

Depco can work with you to worksheet your generator sizing to ensure you choose the right generator for your needs. It's important to us to ensure your generator can sufficiently handle your power requirements and that you are not overpurchasing for the power you actually need.

This video demonstrates how to use Caterpillar's SpecSizer software. This software program allows a user to easily size and write specifications for a diesel generator set. SpecSizer is available free of charge from Caterpillar.
