Sandy Relief Concert Reminds Us to Have a Backup Power Plan

Did you catch the Sandy Relief concert last night? Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi, from New Jersey, and Billy Joel, long identified with Long Island, were on their second Hurricane Sandy telethon, following an NBC studio broadcast on Nov. 2. They were joined by Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Eric Clapton, Roger Waters from Pink Floyd and Chris Martin from Coldplay. There were some great performances and all for an important cause.

Superstorm Sandy hit the Eastern seaboard nearly two months ago and many areas are still without power. While losing power is typically an inconvenience for anyone, it can be especially devastating for data center facilities. Can you imagine a data center being down for almost two months—possibly even longer? Think of the business being put on hold, the money not being made and the customers without their vital information for the time being and quite possibly a loss of their data forever. What if that was your business? What if that was your data at risk?

As we all know, meteorologists have more advanced and reliable technology today, allowing them to predict hurricanes, storms and blizzards early on. However these aren’t always the only causes to power outages. Many other disasters can have the ability to knock out power and you may have never even seen them coming. A sudden power outage for a data center could result in a permanent loss of information if the center is not properly equipped to handle such situations. Even brief power outages can cause productivity, material and revenue losses.

Earlier this year, Amazon Web Services data center in Virginia lost power after a severe thunderstorm, which caused major companies like Netflix, Pinterest and Instagram to be temporarily shut down. Customers of these companies could not access their services for almost 24 hours and perceptibly were not pleased… and that was barely even one full day. Imagine weeks or months without these businesses and services. This is just one minor example of how power outages can cause major backlash for many businesses—data centers especially.

While you can’t predict every little thing that could possibly go wrong, you can certainly be better prepared for the unexpected. Backup power systems help deplete the chances of your business shutting down due to power outages. Depco has multiple power solutions beneficial in times of disasters or other power outage circumstances.
